The Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter is dedicated to providing shelter to unwanted, abandoned and abused animals in the Wilkes County area, as well as offering low-cost spay and neutering. "We try to place every animal that we can," says Director Gloria Wheatley. "It's not about us, it's about the animals. We try to do the best we can by them and get them into homes. We're in it for that one main purpose." Above: New digs for the shelter! ETA Fall 2011.
The shelter works with different rescue groups locally and throughout the United States.
Thnaks to a partnership with Petsmart in Duluth, GA and the "Leftover Pets" organization, the majority of cats are moved into their section in the store and adopted from there.
Dogs are lucky enough to be connected to rescue organizations as far away as New York, Connecticut, Vermont or New Hampshire. They pay for the transport and the driver, while the local shelter takes care of the spay or neuter, rabies, heatworm check and vaccines.
Through wonderful and dedicated voluteers, the animals up for adoption have their health concerns addressed, are taken to public areas for adoption oportunities, the dogs are walked and socialized, and fundraising events are planned and celebrated.
"The main thing is networking," says Gloria. "And we've all got to work together."

Even the mailbox is happy to be here!
The shelter was built in 1989 and opened in 1990. Of course, buildings need upkeep, and work continues to provide a clean, comfortable stop for dogs on their way to a permanent home.
Please contact us anytime! We look forward to hearing from you.
